Now is a great time to get out and play Wachesaw Plantation East!  The course is green and playable.  These kind of conditions do not happen by themselves or overnight.  On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we take a look behind the scenes at some of the work that has been done recently to help get the golf course ready to show off during the spring golf season.

PGA Head Professional, Mike DeLuca took us behind the scenes to see what the management and staff have done to get the course in the shape that local and visiting golfers alike have come to expect when they tee it up at Wachesaw East.  He gave incite to some of the planning and preparation that superintendent, Harold McCuller, and his staff go through.  Getting a golf course in great shape is not something that is done at the last minute or with minimal planning.  Most of the work is done months in advance and on a schedule that is specific and followed closely.

“One of the big things we did for this golf season was to remove over 200 trees from several holes around the course” Harold told us.  “The reason for that is that the trees had matured and created a shade issue.  That means they had grown so tall and full that they were shading too much of the grass and not allowing it to grow and thrive.”

Another thing that the large old trees affect is the cart paths.  Roots from some of these trees had started to come up under the carts paths and create cracked areas and uneven parts to the paths.  If not kept in check these problem areas become worse to the point where golf carts almost cannot drive over them.  This in turn makes for a bad experience for golfers riding around the course.  Nobody wants to ride on beat up and broken cart paths.

“All the hard work and long hours that Harold and his crew put into the golf course on projects like this are invaluable to the course” says DeLuca.  “They work hard enough as it is on the regular day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the course, but it is these types of projects that can make a world of difference to the golfers that play here.”
